Ampex was a big name in tape recorders and magnetic tape back in those days. Very interesting story. The symbols stuck.

Pause icon design
by The Real Edward Gentry inhello: back in the 60's, i knew a designer for the ampex corporation.
one day, f. arden farey, the manager of industrial design gave him the task to create an icon for pause since the company was marketing in foreign markets and the word "pause" didn't translate well in most foreign languages.
he looked at pause and finally decided that it was a "sorta" stop.

Did Jesus pre exist? Yes or no?
by UnshackleTheChains inwhen i first became a witness, i always found the teaching about jesus being the arch angel michael hard to swallow.
i did however believe that jesus pre existed as a master worker alongside god (the first of his creation).. but now everything is brought into question having watched anthony buzzard explain why jesus could not have pre existed as it is impossible to pre exist yourself.
also the fact that it all sounds contradictory to suggest, he was already alive millions of years before he was transferred to mary's womb to be born as a human - the son of man?.

What a wide range of beliefs! The Word promises that one day we shall all know Truth. In the meanwhile we all form experience based opinions of both polarities. Which means that when the time comes many will be happily satisfied while others will be pleasantly (or not so pleasantly) surprised.
No matter. The story has a very happy ending. We'll all be made whole.

Quote from Cofty:
Finding Truth can often be a difficult process. If you have any acquaintances in law enforcement who are able to speak candidly you will find verification. At the moment there are few other alternatives.I was hoping you had something more reliable.
Conspiracy theorists are the most gullible people.

We're not going to have nonsense conspiracy theories promoted on here though. If you persist with them Old Navy then your account WILL be deleted.
I'm sure that you have reasons Simon, but can't help thinking at the same time how this resembles the sort of counsel independent thinkers within The Cult receive should they question "truth" as promoted by the WTBorg Cult Inc. Perhaps we've reached a point in societal development where it is impossible to escape cult controls.

Also, where is the security footage? Vegas hotels are covered in cameras - the question of how he got guns up to the room and whether he was alone or not should be trivial to answer.
Good question. There is extensive video which has been made available to law enforcement authorities. They are unable to say much at the moment but have stated that it is very, very unlikely that the prime suspect acted alone. Numerous witness accounts support that premise.

Why I think the Trinity doctrine is an irrelevant talking point with JWs, and what I believe could be a better approach.
by Island Man inthere are no authentic/uncontested bible verses that prove a trinity.
the trinity doctrine is arrived at by inferences - not unlike the way that jws arrive at the doctrine that jesus is michael the archangel.
the jw proof texts against the trinity are at least as strong, if not stronger than, trinity proof texts.

I've never believed in a Trinity as defined by the Roman Church. I was never a Catholic, never indoctrinated by any other "religion" prior to my affiliation with the Jws, but had read much of The Word in my early teens and came to an understanding of The Almighty and His son The Firstborn of Creation.
The Word isn't clear on how many other sons were created prior to the physical creation but to me it seems reasonable that many may have been.
We on Earth, and any other physical beings which may exist, have life because The Firstborn Son wanted us. The Firstborn Son therefore took ownership over all that he and his Father together brought into existence. All that has happened in the history of Earth and man was not a surprise to The Almighty One or His Firstborn Son since they knew how things would transpire. The Firstborn Son had agreed from the very beginning to assume human form as The Son of Man in order to accomplish his work as The Lamb of God. Following successful completion of his human life, a necessary experience, he also experienced necessarily a very painful death. Then a resurrection to increased position and glory in the Heavenly Realm because he had proven his obedience and faithfulness.
While we have some idea of the extent of the Heavenly Family, The Word doesn't reveal in complete detail its fullness. At some future time we will come to know.
It's a marvelous story which, from our human perspective, is really just beginning. What is yet to come is going to be absolutely amazing. Well, once some ugliness brought to us by the "bad guys" has come to pass.
The Jw teachings in the 50s were pretty much in agreement with what I'd already come to understand from my study of The Word. Other aspects of their doctrine, dogma and practice, however, were a turn-off. While they have some few things "right" they have, to their shame, a lotta things "wrong."
I believe that Lord Messiah has been resurrected to a life quite similar to his Father and that he does have "deity." Is he equal to his Father? No, he tells us that he is less than his Father, but he could be thought of as our God; In addition to the Almighty One his Father. The Son of God has the authority to act on behalf of his Father since they are "one" in all things.
Do many here believe the Trinity Doctrine?

Along with her rants she'll throw in enough Jehovah talk to make it seem like she is on the high road, but the fact is that she doesn't act like it. No self control, etc.
Might it be the Imperfect Men (and Women) Card which they believe entitles them to a "pass?"
Years ago I noticed that many of the Older witnesses were gentle folk and very kind. It was the younger folk that were not so well behaved and exhibited an almost MPD persona; one personality for the hall and the "brothers" ; the other for everywhere else.
Yep, Scratch Me 1010 described it well above.

The Watchtower's Real Crisis
by JeffT inwhen discussing the watchtowers financial problems, i've generally been of the opinion that they probably are not in a real financial crisis.
i've come to believe that money may be something of an issue, but its wrapped up in a much larger problem.
this came to me this morning when reading about the annual meeting.. i think the society's leadership is just plain out of ideas.

Quote from Steve 2:
...cults survive because people need them. A lot of what jw org is doing is streamlining and cost-cutting. It will survive - just not as the powerhouse of growth it once was in the west.
Aye, 'tis true. Cults survive if they are able to adapt with cunning cleverness. Although what seems to be increased militancy in enforcement of their "closed" information control over the membership and persistent shunning to destroy families may be the wrong "model" to pursue. In some ways it seems that WTBorg Cult Inc. is emulating the proven "love of money" techniques of the very successful televangelists of Christendom.
What is the WTBorg Cult Inc. in the process of morphing into?
Transmogrification?
